Here’s why kids need more outdoor time

It’s no secret that kids today spend more time indoors than ever before. With screens dominating so many aspects of their lives, it’s no wonder that childhood obesity rates are on the rise. But there are plenty of reasons why kids need to spend more time outdoors, and here are just a few.

Getting outside can help kids focus and do better in school. A recent study found that students with regular access to outdoor activities improved their attention spans and overall grades. Even just a 20-minute walk can help increase focus and concentration. So if your child is having trouble paying attention in school, a dose of fresh air might be all they need.

Outdoor time is also important for physical health. According to the CDC, childhood obesity rates have tripled in the last 30 years. And while many factors contribute to this, one of the most significant is the lack of outdoor activity. Kids need to move their bodies every day, and being outdoors is the perfect opportunity to do just that. From running and playing tag to climbing trees and riding bikes, there are endless possibilities for physical activity when kids are outside.

Finally, getting outdoors can exercise mental health. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and it can also help boost self-esteem and confidence. For children who tend to be shy or withdrawn, being outdoors can provide a sense of freedom and independence. And for kids who struggle with behavioural issues, being outdoors can help them burn off excess energy positively.

So next time your child asks to go outside and play, say yes! It’s good for their young body and mind. Outdoor time is an important part of childhood development, so encourage it as much as possible.
